Children and Teens of Divorce

During the process of divorce, children and adolescents suffer multiple losses including:

• Loss of their nuclear family
• Loss of the way their parents were
• Loss of how they knew their family to be

Depending on the developmental age, a child may not even understand why the divorce is happening and may have difficulty believing that it was about something outside of them. Helping children and teens during the divorce process is often necessary in order to provide support and increased understanding during an inevitably difficult time.
