5 Tips for Maintaining Mental Health at Work
Author: Kathryn Lodwick-Jones
Work can be stressful, but prioritizing your mental health helps you remain present, flexible, and capable. It can be easy to become overwhelmed by a never-ending workload, so finding ways to preserve inner peace at work is crucial to overall well-being. Here are five practical tips to maintain balance and reduce workplace stress.
1. Set Boundaries
A lack of boundaries between work and life can lead to burnout. Set clear limits on work hours, take regular breaks, and avoid checking emails after hours. Learning to say “no” to excessive tasks is essential for maintaining balance, even when it’s challenging to do so.
2. Prioritize Self-Care
Your emotional and physical well-being directly impact your mental health. Prioritize taking care of yourself holistically: get enough sleep, eat nutritious meals, stay hydrated, and incorporate movement into your day. Small actions, even as simple as a 5-minute meditation or a walk can refresh your mind and calm your mood.
3. Foster Healthy Work Relationships
Practicing self-care only goes so far; fostering and maintaining a social support network at work and outside of work can help you navigate challenges more effectively. Explore opportunities for social connection with colleagues at work. Identify ways to collaborate with peers, express concerns, and don’t hesitate to ask for help if work becomes overwhelming.
4. Stay Organized to Manage Stress
An organized physical space can foster a calm headspace. Implement organizational tools and structure, rethink your typical to-do list, and break larger projects into smaller steps. The Eisenhower Matrix and Pomodoro Technique are a great place to start. If you’re stuck, it means step one was too big. Stay on top of the set up of your workspace and try to maintain a tidy, clutter free environment. Sometimes even adding a little personality to your desk, if your work allows, can brighten your mood. A simple desk plant, candle, or inspirational photo or object can help ground or spruce up a space.
5. Seek Support When Needed
If workplace stress becomes too much, talk to a manager, utilize Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), or seek professional help. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and seeking support is a sign of strength and self-awareness, not weakness or unreliability. Maintaining your mental well-being at work is a constant and often non-linear process, but you don’t have to struggle through it or feel alone.
