Overview:
In this workshop, the participants will discuss and process concepts around cultural humility, cultural competence and sex positivity in order to apply these skills to working with sexually marginalized populations beyond LGBTQ+. Participants will gain understanding of folks who identify as kinky, poly and/or sex workers and discuss and confront any learned stereotypes that impede unconditional positive regard and skillful heart-centered care. The workshop will conclude with strategies, attitudes, skills and next steps for creating open affirming working relationships with clients representing sexually marginalized populations.
Objectives:
- Discuss common stereotypes of sexually marginalized populations
- Analyze the way negative beliefs about sexually marginalized populations impede the ability to create safe working relationships with those individuals and communities.
- Demonstrate cultural competence, cultural humility concepts to build strategies around working with clients who are kinky, polyamorous or do sex work.
- Explain next steps for creating open affirming therapeutic alliances with sexually marginalized clients.
Presenter:
Catherine Dukes, PhD, LCSW, (she/her/hers) is the CEO of the Center for Connection in Delaware, specializing in sex therapy, couples therapy with all populations and psychotherapy with sexually-marginalized communities. Dr. Dukes has been a professional sexual health educator and professional trainer for over 20 years. She served as the VP of Education and Training leading Planned Parenthood of Delaware’s Sexuality Education Training Institute from 2006-2019. She led her department in winning three national Planned Parenthood education awards. Dr. Dukes holds a PhD in Human Sexuality from the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality and an MSW from Widener University. She has published lesson plans in the curricula “Teaching Safer Sex” and “Sex Ed in the Digital Age” and “Sexual
Orientation” curriculum and has published articles in the Delaware Journal of Public Health.
