Addiction Recovery Center of Excellence (ARCoE): Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Who is eligible for this program?

This program is for any individual who identifies as having an unhealthy relationship with drugs and/or alcohol. It is designed to support individuals who have completed the initial stages of their recovery process (ex. PHP, IOP, OP) and who are seeking ongoing support to manage co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, as well as individuals who may be looking to develop a healthier relationship with substances. It is particularly suited for those who need help managing both their mental health and substance use. Appropriateness of fit will be determined on a case by case basis.

  1. What types of services are offered in this program?

Our program offers a range of services including:

– Personalized therapy sessions to address both mental health and substance use disorders.

– Flexible scheduling with options for daytime and evening appointments.

– Sessions available in-person (at select office locations) or via Telehealth.

– Evidence-based practices and integration with 12-step programming, if applicable.

  1. How often will I need to attend therapy sessions?

The frequency of therapy sessions will be determined based on your individual needs and treatment plan. We offer flexible scheduling to accommodate diverse client schedules. However, it is recommended to begin with weekly individual sessions to accurately assess your needs and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

  1. What should I expect during my intake and therapy sessions?

During the intake session, a therapist will review your treatment agreement and intake paperwork with you, and then they will obtain a personal history and discuss scheduling needs. Therapy sessions will focus on addressing both mental health and addiction issues, and your therapist will work with you to develop strategies and solutions for your ongoing recovery.

  1. What happens if my therapist thinks I need a higher level of care?

If your therapist determines that a higher level of care is needed, they will provide you with a referral to an appropriate facility or service. This referral is intended to ensure you receive the most suitable level of support for your needs and will include a “warm handoff” if applicable.

6. What if I choose not to follow the referral to a higher level of care?

If you decline to move to a higher level of care when it is deemed necessary, therapy services with Equilibria will be terminated. In this case, your therapist will provide you with referrals to other resources or providers that might help you continue your recovery.

7. What is a “warm handoff”?

A “warm handoff” is a process where your current therapist helps facilitate a smooth transition to a new provider or facility. This ensures that you receive continuous care and support throughout the transition period. During a “warm handoff” you may continue treatment with your current therapist until you begin your new services.

8.Will my insurance cover the costs of the program?

Equilibria is in-network with most major insurance providers (Independence Blue Cross, Aetna, Highmark, Quest, Medicare). We recommend checking with your insurance company to confirm coverage and any out-of-pocket costs before starting the program.

9.How do I schedule an appointment or get started with the program?

To get started, you can contact us directly to schedule an appointment. Our referral coordinators will help to schedule an intake session. From there you will be connected with a therapist who best suits your needs. You can also schedule a call with Sam DeFilippo who is the program lead.

10. What happens if I miss an appointment?

If you miss an appointment, please contact your therapist as soon as possible to reschedule. Consistent attendance is important for your progress, and we encourage you to communicate any difficulties you may have in keeping your appointments. If you miss an appointment without giving your therapist at least 24 hours notice, Equilibria may charge a missed session fee up to the amount of your full insurance fee.

11. Is my participation in the program confidential?

Yes, all information shared during therapy is kept confidential according to applicable laws and ethical guidelines. Exceptions may occur in cases where there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, or as required by law as described in the Outpatient Services Contract.

12. Can I switch therapists if needed?

Yes, if you feel that you need to switch therapists for any reason, please discuss this with our program lead, Sam DeFilippo, LPC, NCC, CAADC. We will work with you to find a suitable alternative to ensure you receive the best possible care.

I bring a deep experience in both outpatient and intensive group settings for individuals managing alcohol and other drug use disorders. I look at therapy as a journey that the client and clinician take together, which often involves walking together through the darkness. As a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania, I work alongside my clients to help them move forward and achieve the goals that they have for themselves and to help them live their best possible lives. It is very important to me that I provide a place that feels safe, nonjudgmental, and supportive, which is what helps me work with my clients in this way.

While I look at most problems and situations through a cognitive-behavioral lens, I take a humanistic and person-centered approach to treatment. This means that I tend to emphasize the interaction between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, but I integrate techniques and ideas from various therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Relapse Prevention, and others. I make an effort to tailor treatment to each individual client so therapy can be whatever each person wants or needs it to be.

Your story is important. My role as a therapist is to work alongside you to understand what you want to see in your story, and help you move forward in it, with increased fulfillment and hope. There may be times where you feel overwhelmed and overburdened, experience self-doubt, struggle with triggers, or are learning about yourself in recovery. Perhaps you’re having a hard time understanding the way that you’re feeling, or you want to create balance, build motivation, and gain confidence, especially when barriers get in the way of your goals. In our work together, I will help you through navigating these experiences.

I am a licensed psychologist in the state of Pennsylvania. I received my doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2019. I have previously worked in an inpatient setting, drug and alcohol rehab, and outpatient mental health settings, providing individual and group therapy.

So, you have decided to start therapy, great! That is a positive first step. I believe that therapy is a journey. Some journeys are longer than others, and everyone gets to a different desired destination. I hope to provide a safe and supportive space to travel on that journey alongside of you.

I graduated with a Masters in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh, and have been practicing for over 15 years. My foremost goal as a therapist is to maintain a safe and supportive environment for you. To do that we’ll use humor, focus on building trust, and focus on small and manageable goals that feel meaningful to you. Guiding values for me while practicing therapy are “progress, not perfection” and the beliefs that everyone deserves to show themselves compassion and deserves to experience unconditional positive regard.

Within that framework the modalities that I find most helpful are CBT, which focuses on challenging and restructuring negative or unhelpful thoughts, and DBT, which focuses on coping with distress, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness, as well as self- compassion work, harm-reduction strategies, person-centered therapy, solutions-focused work, and trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) for youth who have experienced trauma.

Credentials:

  • Masters in Clinical Social work from the University of Pittsburgh
  • Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin

When you’re the one others turn to at work, at home, or in crisis it can be hard to recognize when you need support too. Helpers often carry the weight of others’ struggles while quietly managing or pushing aside their own. When being strong for others becomes the norm, asking for help can feel unfamiliar or even overwhelming.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor with a background working in crisis and substance use treatment in both inpatient and outpatient settings, I specialize in supporting those who are used to supporting everyone else. Whether you’re in a caregiving profession, a leadership role, or simply the person everyone leans on, I understand how easily burnout, stress, anxiety, trauma, or substance use can take root and take over.

My approach is compassionate, down-to-earth, and collaborative. I aim to create an environment where you can comfortably put yourself first, let your guard down, and rest by putting down the things that you’ve been carrying for others and yourself. You will have space to reconnect with yourself and build the tools needed not just to cope, but to thrive.

Credentials:

  • Licensed Professional Counselor in Pennsylvania
  • Master’s Degree in Clinical and Counseling Psychology, Trauma Focus from Chestnut Hill College
