Susan Fichandler

In my therapy practice I start with the belief that each individual is unique and that each individual has a well of strength and self-knowledge. I also start with the belief that the inner life matters. I strive to find out through the process of deep dialogue what it feels like to be my client and to help them tap into their resilience.

I draw on both psychodynamic psychotherapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy as my theoretical frameworks. In psychodynamic psychotherapy, the assumption is that there are factors outside of a person’s awareness (unconscious thoughts, feelings and experiences) which influence their thoughts and actions. We can look at defenses, patterns in relationships, conflicts and desires. In Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, the aim is to learn and use different skills with the goal of greater psychological flexibility. The aim is also to focus on living a life more aligned with one’s values and goals.

I have been a practicing therapist for 30 years. I enjoy working with individuals anywhere between the ages of 13 and 113, as I believe that human beings are engaged in a process of development throughout their lives. I am adept at addressing feelings of depression and anxiety, and at guiding clients through transitions as well as through grief and loss. Also, I am skilled at working with problems in relationships and difficulties in one’s family of origin. I am warm and compassionate and believe that self-compassion is essential as a place to start.
