Parent Coaching to Reduce Family Accommodation of Child and Adolescent Anxiety (SPACE Model)
Presented by Caroline Haimm, PhD
Wednesday, 3/12/25: 10-11:30am (Zoom)
1.5 CEs will be available
Summary: When anxious kids and teenagers are not able to engage in treatment, parents may feel at a loss for how to help their struggling child. Fortunately, there are treatments for child anxiety in which parents alone can learn strategies to help their anxious child, without any requirement for the child to participate. This presentation is geared towards therapists who are interested in learning about parent coaching for childhood anxiety as an alternative to individual therapy. Dr. Haimm will present on evidence-based parent-coaching strategies drawn from the Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) program, positive parenting practices, as well as her own clinical experiences in working with parents with anxious kids. The presentation will provide therapists with an overview of the following parent-coaching strategies: 1) focusing on unilateral parental behavior change; 2) helping parents respond to their anxious child with increased support; 3) helping parents improve their own coping in response to their anxious child; and 4) helping parents reduce family accommodation of their child’s anxiety. This presentation will also provide brief examples to illustrate these skills in clinical practice. It will be useful for clinicians working with anxious children and families, particularly those who wish to expand their practice to include parent-coaching in addition to individual therapy.
